As part of Social Design Days, organized by the Design Institute and dedicated to urban culture and the influence of design and architecture on social environments, trends and subcultures, Ubani’s co-founder David Brodsky presented the project “Tbilisi and Typography.” Initiated by Ubani, the project focuses on collecting, documenting and studying inscriptions, letters and signs found across the city.

The first stage brought together three participants: artist and book designer Manana Arabuli, photographer and creative practitioner Dante Marcantognini, and type and graphic designer Yury Ostromentsky. A selection of their work was displayed as a teaser exhibition throughout Social Design Days.

As a next stage, the initiative aims to involve more local and international collaborators who explore the social, cultural and visual dimensions of Tbilisi’s typography and develop a more comprehensive exhibition around this topic.

In the future, we hope to develop this research into a larger exhibition, while also exploring digital reconstructions, new typefaces, and other contemporary interpretations of the city’s inscriptions.
